This is the third book of this intriguing series by Julia Brannan. It just gets more interesting by the page! The Jacobites are waiting for their Prince Charles to launch his attack on English soil to take the throne! The author does an incredible job of describing events as they unfold as the political pot is constantly stirring. The two main characters, Beth and Alex must keep up pretenses whole spying for Prince Charles. They take a trip to Alex's Scottish clan and Beth learns, what it's like to live as a highlander. The descriptions are raw and real as,are the secondary characters and resulting situations.I love the relationship of Alex and Beth and the strength of of their bond as it's tested over and over.
There is obviously going to be a fourth book in the future, and I can barely wait.
I highly recommend this informative, sensitive story to history buffs and romance readers. This is such a good book!

I am not quite finished with this book but I keep wishing that there were more books in the series because I really like the characters and would like to spend more time with them. The personalities of the Royal family are extremely interesting and it is nearly unbelievable that they are so convinced that they are above making an error, or that anyone else''s opinion is valid. No wonder their style of rulers does not exist in Europe or the America's.
Beth easily fits in to Highland life. She earns respect as a hard worker & by exhibiting more strength & stamina than would be expected of a slightly built woman. Back in London she & Alex resume their alter egos. Other characters attached to the family take on more depth in contributing to the narrative. Sarah, Duncan, Anne, Richard.
I would have given this 5 stars, except for the distressing use of my Lord's name as a curse word. I am VERY interested in knowing the rest of this engaging tale, but hesitate due to my discomfort at seeing my Lord's name taken in vein. I believe it is entirely possible to avoid such use, especially as the mainly guilty parties are supposedly devout Catholics!
The third volume of the Jacobite Chronicles is excellent, probably better than the first two novels. The author has a vivid imagination and brings the characters to life in both trivial daily activities as well as visits with royal families or drama due to their dangerous spy missions. The reader gets to go to Scotland and learn about how the old Highland Clans lived and interacted. There are more visits to royalty and learning about the English kings and princes of the 1740s. There seems to be more history in this novel than in the prior novels, and the story is woven very well around the rising of the jacobites. An excellent read and I can't wait for the next book in the series.
Just finished reading The Gathering Storm by Julia Brannan and give it a minimum 5 star rating.. This is another wonderful book about the further adventures of Sir Anthony and Beth. The story was very interesting with may different facets to it and was laugh-out-loud funny at quite a few parts. I am sure people were sneaking looks at me on the bus, which is where I do most of my reading , because I kept breaking out into chuckles and out right laughter. this book was as hard to put down as the first two in the series (the only reason it took me so long for me to read it is I have to work). I am looking forward to the next installment of the Jacobite Chronicles.
This series is quickly becoming a favourite and I am becoming very nervous about the outcome for not only Beth & Alex, but all of the other characters that are so beautifully human - the Jacobites were not successful, so I know there will be some painful separations and losses in the future books. Brannan has a remarkable ability to create an exciting, yet believable storyline that is perfectly woven into the true historic events. Also appreciate that she addresses the actual events at the end (especial the less believable), showing she has done her homework. Cannot wait to continue reading this series.
Once again Ms. Brannan shows her rare talent for writing. Historically accurate and with great care she transports you to the Jacobite Rebellion and the MacGregor clan. She writes in a style that has you in the 18th century as if you were a ghost in the room. This is the 3rd installment that, as with her previous books, will have you laughing, crying and holding your breath. A story of love, loss and heroes, you will not be disappointed.
